Volunteer Training
THANK YOU for Volunteering at the Giving Machines!
We truly appreciate your willingness to help — we couldn’t make such a meaningful impact without dedicated volunteers like you.
*If you are the first shift of the day, you will need to get out the giant cards for pictures.
The storage closet is across the street on the canal- refer to the map to help you find it.
Cross the street and go down the ramp near the ATM's. When the ramp ends, the storage door will be in front of you. The code was given to your stake and will also be posted INSIDE the machines.
We also have red Giving Machine aprons for you to wear to identify that you are a volunteer, along with the volunteer lanyard. There will be pass along cards with Giving Machine info stored in the back of the machines- feel free to give out!
*Last shift of the day, put away anything that was taken out during the shift.
Troubleshooting Receipts and Transactions:
This year, a QR code is available to help patrons fill out a form if they didn’t receive a receipt or had a duplicate transaction. (This is rare.) We will have the QR code taped to the back of the machines.
The machines automatically detect duplicates. For example, if someone buys one $25 item and immediately tries to buy another $25 item, the second purchase may be declined.
To avoid this, they can either add multiple items to their cart before checkout or choose items with different dollar amounts.
Payment Options:
The machines accept all major credit cards and Apple/Google Pay.
Patrons can tap or insert their cards — swiping is no longer supported.
Restocking Guidelines:
Please restock only one machine at a time so the other remains available for use.
When restocking, don’t fill every slot completely — leave a few in the bottom tray.
The closest bathrooms will be in Dave's Hot Chicken or in Brickopolis. There is also one upstairs above the Comets shop on days that they are open.
There is no proselyting allowed at the machines. If someone asks for more information you can direct them to the church's website to learn more!
Below are several training videos to help you get familiar with the machines.
The machines will be on 24/7, so no need to turn power on. If the screen is blank, just press the touchscreen to activate it.
To make a selection, just press the touchscreen with the numbers matching the item cards they wish to donate.
Giving Machines accept debit/credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express) via tap or inserting the card, and mobile payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay, and so on). Upon checkout, donors have the opportunity to cover credit card fees (3%) if they desire. Otherwise, the Church will cover those fees.
Patrons must select their items, then they can pay. If someone needs help, you can help them check out, but confirm the donation amount before checking out and let donors handle their payment to avoid liability.
If someone wants to purchase multiples of any item, they can adjust quantity on checkout screen. Patrons can also select one of each item quickly by keying in “777”.
The total if the choose "777" is $1898.00
After a transaction is complete, a summary will appear on the screen. Donors can choose to receive a receipt via text, email, or by scanning a code on the screen. If a donor wants a receipt, they can use the on-screen keyboard to enter a mobile number or email address.
Whether it’s from a user or a machine error, occasionally people want a receipt after it’s too late to request one. With the user’s information (date, time, amount) we can look up the transaction and send a receipt manually. There will be a QR code taped to the back of the machine which will take you to a form to fill out so they can't be sent a receipt.
If you notice multiple users having abnormal trouble with cards or accepting mobile pay, open the Giving Machine door and toggle the power switch on and off (leaving it off for about 5 seconds before turning it back on). Once the machine reboots and after the screen becomes active again, you’ll want to watch the credit card reader and make sure it says “ready” before allowing people to use the Giving Machine again. This reboot process should only take about 2 minutes.
To remove the tray, there is a tab on each side that you need to push up on and the tray will release so you can pull it out. Once loaded, push the tray back in until you hear it click.
If cards are loaded sloppily, rows will jam up and will not vend correctly. Take extra care to angle each card slightly backward and ensure everything is in neat rows before closing the rows. Even if lines are long and you feel pressured to rush, take your time! Troubleshooting an error caused by chaotic restocking will take more time than restocking things correctly.
THANK YOU AND HAVE FUN!
